What a time to be alive, huh?
Nothing like this COVID-19 situation has happened in about a hundred years--the Spanish Flu in 1918 is the most oft-used comparison right now. So, pretty much, there’s been nothing like this in recent memory.
I really want to emphasize: Please don’t panic. We will get through this. We are all in this together. Please be smart: Wash your hands, wipe down your phones, try not to touch your face, cough and sneeze into your elbow, avoid crowds as much as you can. Also: Please live your life!
How to live your life, though, when schools, libraries, restaurants, cultural institutions, EVERYTHING is closed… The library is here for you. You found this blog on a library website and are presumably still reading, so that’s a good place to start!
You CAN still “go” to a museum! Hundreds of museums have their galleries online! For FREE!!! You can also “tour” some U.S. National Parks! Check out the Monterey Bay Aquarium live cams--I particularly like the Monterey Bay Cam, I watched four seals sunning themselves on some rocks and spotted sea otters this afternoon! The Smithsonian’s National Zoo also has live cams that are always worth checking out.
You can also “go” to the movies! From the comfort of your favorite chair or your bed, in your jammies! Explore what’s available--for FREE-- on Kanopy! The available selections will surprise you.
Need something else to do? Check out Volume, the Denver Public Library’s local music website! Download and stream LOCAL MUSIC for FREE with your library card.
Don’t forget about the Denver Public Library’s ebooks! Also free with your library card. We’ve got lots of titles available--be sure to check out the Teen page. (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is just one of MANY superb titles. You know--don't panic and carry a towel, and what-not.)
Let’s end with a little levity--check out this music video. (R.E.M. is always amazing and you should make a point of being familiar with them. Also share it with your parents, they’ll appreciate it.)
