I like pencils, especially colored pencils, and have always wondered just how does the color gets inside the pencil? My curiosity led me to Henry Petroski, an engineer who also likes pencils. His book, The Pencil, answered every question I had about the pencil's design and history. Even though the book was published over 20 years ago and technology changes, pencils are still selling. But wait! I am increasingly reaching for my cell phone to write poetry or doodle instead of selecting a sleek pencil. So will pencils become a thing of the past? The Pencil Museum, located in England's Lake District, is making sure pencils have a history to write about. Whether it is the longest colored pencil in the world or a James Bond model, the museum is positive pencils will prevail.
