Getting ready for Ready Player One!

Ready Player One book cover

Ernest Cline’s action packed dystopian homage to the 70’s and 80’s, Ready Player One, hits the big screen this weekend. Can’t wait to see the OASIS IRL? Wish you could be the one to find Halliday’s egg? Here are some essentials that any fan won’t want to miss, available here at the Denver Public Library!

Music was a huge deal in the 70’s and 80’s. As readers are already aware, Rush’s 2112 album hides a big clue to where one can find the egg, as well as its own dystopian story to tell of the distant year 2112. Up next, make sure to add David Bowie, Duran Duran, Billy Idol and Blondie to your playlist -- all of which are also referenced in Cline’s novel. Top your playlist off with New Order’s Blue Monday and you’ll be ready to rock out OASIS style.

Movies are a big part of the adventure as well! The 1983 Matthew Broderick film, Wargames, contains another clue to the egg’s location. Speaking of Matthew Broderick, another great movie to check out before watching Ready Player One is 1985’s sword and sorcerer sleeper hit, Ladyhawke -- just about uniformly adored by the characters of the book and starring Rutger Hauer, of Blade Runner fame (Blade Runner also happens to have a clue!). Finally, if a story of a gamer kid with the fate of the world in their hands appeals to you (which I’m guessing it does), don’t miss The Last Starfighter either!

Of course, no list of recommendations is complete without books and Read Player One is packed with title references. Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Frank Herbert’s Dune, and J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings are all featured throughout the book. Still can’t get enough virtual reality action? Thanks for the new reads. The movie was even better than I imagined and I was so happy to see Lena Waithe!
