what was DevCamp?

DevCamp teens outside of Galvanize

DevCamp was a two-week summer camp on web development for teens ages 12-19 offered in the ideaLAB at Denver Public Library in Colorado in 2014. Over six days, 24 teens learned the basics of HTML, CSS, and a touch of JavaScript, worked side-by-side with professional web developers, toured workplaces, and listened to guest speakers. They worked in five teams, each paired with a mentor, to develop a website based on a theme they chose. At our final party, the websites were evaluated by a team of three judges for content and design, and the winning team won tablets and EVERLASTING FAME.

Team I Forgot getting to know each other

First and foremost, thank you to our amazing mentors. They spent hours working with teens, sharing their mind-blowing skills, and generally being awesome:

Our guest speakers: Michael Arestad from Automattic and Angela Sigg from Denver Public Library.

Our judges: Erik Mitisek, CEO of the Colorado Technology Association, Frank Daidone, Chief Information Officer for the City and County of Denver, and the intrepid and agreeable Angela Sigg.

The fantastic folks at Galvanize and City of Denver Technology Services for giving us tours of their facilities.

Dell for donating the tablets which were awarded to the team which had the best website design.

Cake Crumbs Bakery for donating cupcakes for our final party!

And, last but not least, the fine folks at Codepen for donating pro accounts to our instructors to help with instruction and collaboration during the camp.
